Biography
The cursed cape
Esmer sentience originates from the cursed cape, a mythical item mentioned in the poem The Wretched Child's Needles:
There once was a child of wretched birth
who dug its way straight through the earth
forged five needles at its centre
from July until December
It sewed a portal into its self and cape
so if it were condemned to never wake
all its organs it would hold
hidden from age, maggots, and mold.
The author of the poem is currently unknown.
It's assumed that Esmer was created and dressed with the cape before the death of the cape's creator. However it's unknown who dressed their inanimate form or how this person came into possession of the cape.
Gaining sentience
Esmer's earliest memory is waking up in a desolate forest at night in the Southern territory of Koganon. They stumbled through the forest until they came upon Haven Vinum, taking rest in a small shack storing some hay bales. They were found in the morning by Mayoress Alera Septima. They were offered a place to stay since the town had prepared to accept refugees following the Second Great War. Shortly after settling in, Esmer went to the Hospitalium in Haven, hoping a check up would answer some of their existential questions. The doctor, Lucius Ottavius, observed that Esmer magically gained more autonomy over their form in return for using organs through eating, drinking, and sleeping. Because the connection between using the organs and increased mobility is indirect, Esmer believes they are simply a vessel serving the coat, keeping the organs in order until they find the cape's creator and return their organs to them. Although Esmer desires to be free of this burden, they would like to find out more about the cape's creator as they wouldn't want to bring an evil person back into the world.
